How a Checkered Rug Can Highlight Your Room Decor

A checkered rug can highlight your room’s decor by accentuating the room’s color scheme, adding to the style, and conveying the right tone. Whenever you design a room, you should look for a rug that complements the decor stylistically so that all the items work together to create one unified space. 

Decorating With a Checkered Rug

When you’re decorating with a checkered rug, you have your choice of what style it falls into. Buffalo check rugs are a popular choice for farmhouse homes, but you’ll also find checkered rugs that are vintage, moroccan, or even modern. Be sure to choose a rug design/color palette that fits in with your specific style to reinforce the room’s personality. 

Choosing Which Checkered Rug is Right for You

As you look for your rug, think through these key topics. 

Position: First, determine your room’s layout and where the rug fits into that. Each room is unique, so take the following ideas as guidelines to get you started. 

Living Room: Checkered area rugs are often centered to be with the main seating area, and depending on the size of the living room, you may have the rug overlap with the furniture. If it does overlap, you may have the rug all the way under the furniture or under their front legs. If you choose not to have any overlap, place the rug in front of the seats and ground it with a coffee table. 

Dining Room: To make a dining room that’s both functional and stylish, center your rug beneath the table. Leave about two or three feet of excess for the chairs to be pushed in and out. 

Bedroom: If your bed is centered in the room and is the main focal point, center your rug with the bed by placing it either all the way under the bed or part way beneath it. If you have your bed off to one side of the room, try centering the rug in the middle of the bedroom instead. 

Kitchen: 2x3 and 3x5 checkered rugs are perfect in front of kitchen sinks or stoves. Otherwise, use a checkered runner rug to establish a pathway in galley kitchens or kitchens with an island. 

Bathroom: Bathrooms also use smaller rugs in front of sinks, tubs, and showers. Runners are the perfect addition in front of a double vanity or in another walkway. 

Outdoors: Checkered area rugs are popular for outdoor seating and dining areas. For layout inspiration, look at guidelines for similar indoor areas.

Shape/Size: Once your layout is set, finalize the size and shape of the rug. The size will really depend on the size/shape of the room and if you plan on having the rug overlap with any of the furniture. Be sure that the room is balanced in terms of the rug’s size and shape so that it doesn’t look too large or small for the room.

Color/Pattern: The pattern is already defined with checkered rugs, but you still should decide on what size the pattern is and if it fills the entire rug or just a portion of it. As for color, there are many options to choose from. Classic combinations include black and white, red and white, blue and white, and many more. Other rugs will feature different shades for the pattern like pink, yellow, blue, green, tan, etc. Choose a color that works with your other decor/furniture and creates the right mood.
