No matter your style, a well chosen rug can take your living room from basic to bewitching. Whether your living room is a magnet for hanging out and relaxing or more of a "look but don't touch"? room, we can help you find the perfect rug that you'll love! Follow these helpful tips to get started:
Function Over Form
How do you plan to use your living room? Is it a formal room where you display fine art or interesting artifacts? Or, is it the room where everyone naturally gathers to hang out and relax? Either way, consider the purpose of your space and choose a living room rug that will accommodate and support this purpose.
If your living room is a comfy cozy spot for movie night, choose a rug that's equally comfy and cozy. Try something in a high pile (think shag) or something in a super soft fiber like chenille or wool.
If it's a high traffic room for family members and pets, pick a living room rug in a lower pile and a durable fiber.
Measure It Up
Selecting the right size rug is critical. A large area rug that's too big for the room can overwhelm the space, making the room actually appear smaller. A rug that's too small for the space can make the room feel disjointed or not well thought out. Either way, the wrong sized rug can make the room feel uncomfortable.
Ideally, a large living room area rug will cover a majority of the flooring. For a large living room that means an extra-large area rug. You'll want to leave 12"-18" inches of flooring between the rug and the wall. And seating area furniture should fit completely on the rug or at least make sure the front two legs of the seating area furniture fit on the rug.
Consider the amount of foot traffic your living room rug will be getting.
If the room is heavily used by all the members of the family (including pets), you may want to choose a rug in a natural fiber and a lower pile. Wool, sisal and jute are all easy to clean, especially if they are in a lower pile or flat weave.
If your room doesn't get a lot of foot traffic, then a silk or chenille rug can be a beautiful show piece in a more formal living room.
Layer It On
If you want the durability of a natural fiber rug but the color and interest of show piece rug, consider layering rugs. It's easier than you might think!
Start with a neutral extra large living room rug on the bottom. Be sure it's big enough to contain the seating area furniture. Meaning couches, chairs, coffee tables, etc. fit completely on the rug. Then center a bright beautiful bold colored rug in the middle of the seating area. If you have a coffee table center the rug under the coffee table. And you're done!
If your family room is lacking in pizazz, a big living room rug can be the perfect accent. A large red area rug can give a theater room the luxury vibe.
For a farmhouse family room, try a black and white area rug in a vintage style to add contrast and interest.
If your living room is contemporary, consider a blue abstract patterned area rug.
